Project Literacy-Infused Science Using Technology Opportunities (LISTO)

Between 2008-2012, Project Middle School Science for English Language Learners (MSSELL), a longitunidal randomized control trial study, explored science literacy for English learners (ELs) at the middle school level. Implemented at the fith-grade level, MSSELL (a) increased student science academic achievement and oral reading fluency, (b) increased student participation (partners, group work, hands-on), and (c) increased technology in the science classroom.

Today, Project Literacy-Infused Science Using Technology Opportunities (LISTO) validates the literacy-infused science instructional and curricular innovations from this previous project. The LISTO goals are: (a) support science teachers and principals in building instructional capacity, (b) support 5th grade economically challenged students in the areas of science and literacy (reading/writing), (c) cultivate student interest in STEM, particularly in science, and (d) reduce disparities between rural and non-rural schools (66% schools=rural). 

Project LISTO is a five-year, longitudinal project promoting STEM education and serving rural communities. The term, “listo,” in Spanish means ready, and we are ready to assist teachers and principals in building instructional capacity and improving students’ science and reading/writing literacy achievement. The overarching goal of LISTO is to validate literacy-infused science instructional and curricular innovations from MSSELL via a longitudinal randomized controlled trial study, in order to increase instructional capacity of teachers and to improve students’ science and reading/writing literacy achievement in rural/non-rural schools for economically challenged, inclusive of EL, students.
